Abstract:
The article provides a brief overview of the US electoral law and outlines its distinctive features. American electoral law is very specific and, in comparison to other systems, it has many distinctive features. American electoral system is very stable – all the changes have always been introduced gradually. This evolutionary character has both its advantages and disadvantages. In the article I also provide a brief history of American bicameralism and the reasons of its origin. Furthermore, in the presented paper I discuss the history of changes in the US electoral law (including the issue of the suffrage that has been widened gradually over the years, increasing the number of voters), at times elaborating the reasons of implemented reforms and their meaning. Moreover, I describe the issue of membership of the two chambers of Congress, that reflects character of the political system of the United States as a democratic federation of equal states. Finally, I explore the problem of election campaign, the election itself and its important part – primary election.
