Abstract:
The aim of the work is an attempt to portray the political behaviours of Lodz citizens in reborn Poland (1918–1939) based on the parliamentary elections results.
The basis of the discussion are the results of the elections from 1919, 1922, 1928, 1935 and 1938. The first elections were held according to the decree of the Country’s Head from november 1918, the next three elections were based on the democratic electoral law from 1922. The two last ones had an absolutely different nature: the circle of electors was fundamentally reduced by elevation of the age of people authorised to vote and by delimitating or even eliminating from the parliamentary life the anti-“sanacja” system Opposition.
The parliamentary elections revealed an important political break of electorate of Lodz, which was caused by the great differentiation of nationalities and social classes. The electorate of Lodz was also showing the considerable changeability of the moods an political attractions. The first years of independency the radical tempers were dominating, which was shown by the domination of the leftist parties. The election “swing” made the political preferences of Lodz citizens change for the right wing in the following elections. The characteristic thing about Lodz citizens was that the governing party was never significantly popular – it was expressed in 1935, when the elections were boycotted as the Opposition had been suggesting. - Link do Księgarni ŁTN: Księgarnia
